X-Men Origins: Wolverine (starts in 1845, but the bulk of the story is set in 1979)
Everything set during and after this movie, but before X1, will be marked as ‘W1’. Logan is going through some traumatic events and Marie still isn’t born yet. Bonus: we meet a craptastic version of Deadpool.

X-Men: Apocalypse (starts in 3600 BC, but most of the story is set in 1983)
Fics with this tag pick up during or after X-Men: Apocalypse. The time line is a mess already. Don’t ask.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (starts in 1975 but for the most part takes place in 1992)
XDF fics continue the new take on Jean’s Dark Phoenix but X3 still needs to happen. It doesn’t make any sense. Let’s move on.

X-Men (2000)
The story is set during or after the first X-Men movie. Finally we will meet our favorite couple as a duo. Logan fighting in a cage. Marie on the run. This can also be several years after X1, because when X1 is used, X2 and X3 never happened.

X2: X-Men United (2003)
This tag means the story is set during or after the second X-Men movie. X3 never happened, so Jean ends up dead.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
X3 stories are set during or after X3. Anything can happen because this movie is all over the place. The Cure might not be permanent, Jean was alive to wreck havoc but died again, Scott is lost (presumed dead as well) and Charles has somehow ended up in another man’s body. How? Why? No one knows.

The Wolverine (2013)
Logan and his ‘Japan-adventure’. Fics with W2 respect all that’s happened so far, meaning Mariko and Yukio have to be dealt with and Logan probably needs to be really nice to Magneto in order to get his adamantium claws back.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (big chunk in 1973 but ends up in an alternate version of 2023)
Total reset of the timeline. Fics with this tag respect all movies above, but once Logan returns from 1973, there’s a new universe to explore where everyone is alive and well.
